What Fits, What Is Not Allowed and Disposal in Orangeburg County
Before a dumpster arrives, it helps to know three things: what you can load, what you cannot, and where the box can sit. This page pulls together the general rules most roll-off haulers follow and what the City of Orangeburg and Orangeburg County publish about trash and disposal. Rules change, so treat this as a guide and confirm with your hauler and the city or county. Orangeburg Dumpster Rental is a referral service operated by Recover Profits Now. We do not own trucks or containers; the independent hauler you are connected with quotes, delivers and hauls. Call (803) 878-7538 to reach a local hauler.

Orangeburg County landfill rules
Most roll-off loads in the area go to the Orangeburg County landfill at 310 Endicott Court, off US 601. According to the county's Solid Waste Program page:
- Hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday, with the last arrival at 4:00 PM, and 8:00 AM to noon on Saturday, with the last arrival at 11:30 AM.
- Hand-unloaded shingles must arrive by 3:30 PM.
- Household garbage, demolition material, white goods, yard trash and shingles are listed at $48 per ton.
- Burned garbage, creosote, medical waste and vehicle gasoline tanks are not accepted.
- Asbestos needs an approval letter from the state's asbestos program, special packaging and a scheduled drop-off, and is listed at $154 per ton.
- Tires are taken only on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
- Commercial customers may not bring mixed loads, and individuals must separate their items.
- Payment is cash or check.
Your roll-off hauler deals with the landfill for you, but these rules explain why some items cost extra or are refused. For small amounts of household trash and recycling, the county also runs collection centers; call the county Solid Waste office to ask what each center accepts.
City of Orangeburg curbside rules
Inside city limits, the Sanitation Division collects household garbage, yard trash and some bulky items at the curb each week. According to the city's sanitation page:
- Roll carts go out by 7:00 AM on collection day, not before 4:00 PM the day before, and come back in by 8:00 AM the next day.
- Carts are for garbage only. No yard trash, construction material, liquids or hot embers.
- Tree trimmings, clippings, leaves, furniture and appliances are picked up at the curb. Leaves, pine needles and grass clippings must be kept separate from other trash.
- Each item can be no more than 4 feet in diameter, 10 feet long or 200 pounds, and the Public Works Director may limit the amount.
- Debris from construction, remodeling, landscaping and tree work must be removed by the contractor.
- Nothing goes in or near a storm drain.
Questions about city pickup go to Public Works at (803) 533-6010.
Placing the dumpster
- Space. A 10 to 20 yard box usually needs about 10 to 12 feet of width and 20 to 25 feet of length, plus room for the truck to back in straight. Larger boxes need more.
- Overhead clearance. The truck tilts its bed to slide the box off. Point out low wires and branches.
- Surface. Driveways and gravel pads work best. Lay plywood under the rails to protect concrete or asphalt.
- Soft ground. After heavy rain, yards and dirt drives across the county can rut badly. Low ground near the Edisto and its creeks stays wet longest.
- Septic systems. On rural lots, keep the box and truck off the septic tank and drain field.
- Streets and sidewalks. If the box has to sit on a street, sidewalk or right-of-way, check with the City of Orangeburg, your town or the county about whether a permit is needed.
- HOAs. Lake and golf communities, such as those around Santee, may have their own placement and time rules.
After a storm or flood
After Hurricane Helene in 2024 and the November 2024 Edisto flood, debris piled up across the county. After a declared disaster, local governments sometimes run special debris pickups with rules on sorting. Check with the city or county before paying to haul debris they would take, and photograph damage for insurance before anything is thrown out. See our storm debris page.
